Twenty-two years after their final appearance together on a world championship rally, Michele Mouton is to compete together with Fabrizia Pons, the co-driver with whom she won four world rally events in the eighties.
This time she is to drive a Ford Escort RS, a type of car that dominated the sport in her fledgeling days in the sport.
The event will be the Dunlop Classic Otago Rally, based at Dunedin in New Zealand (9-11 May, 2008).
"I never rallied an Escort in the old days, but I drove one on the East African Classic Safari Rally two years ago, and that was very nice experience," said Mouton.
Pons has competed on the Otago Classic Rally twice before, alongside fellow Italian Alex Fiorio.
The final time Mouton and Pons were paired together was in a Peugeot on the 1986 Tour de Corse, the sad event in which Henri Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto lost their lives. This was when Mouton ended her driving career and started the Race of Champions activities in their memories.
