Türkkan takes command of WRC3 in Chile
Ali Türkkan will carry a commanding WRC3 lead into the final day of Rally Chile BIOBÍO after a dramatic Saturday reshaped the category battle.
The Turkish driver ended the second leg with a total time of 2h32min05.3sec, giving him a 3min42.8sec advantage over Ignacio Gardiol with four stages remaining.
Türkkan’s position was strengthened considerably during an attritional day which saw several of his Junior WRC rivals hit trouble. Calle Carlberg’s challenge ended following a heavy roll on SS11, while Friday leader Gil Membrado lost substantial time after rolling on Saturday morning and subsequently suffering intercooler damage.
Gardiol emerged from the drama in second overall, with Chilean driver Felipe Padilla another 1min09.3sec behind in third.
Alex Heilbrunn holds fourth, 6min35.1sec from Türkkan, while Eduardo Castro completes the top five just 21.7sec further back.
Türkkan is also leading the Junior WRC classification and heads into Sunday with the championship firmly within reach after beginning the Rally Chile finale three points behind Carlberg.
Sunday features four remaining stages and 71.2 competitive kilometres, concluding with the BIOBÍO Wolf Power Stage.
