Mikkelsen’s golden opportunity: Norwegian returns to Hyundai for 2024

Hyundai Motorsport has officially welcomed Andreas Mikkelsen back to its top-level roster, with the Norwegian set to share the team’s third car with Dani Sordo and Esapekka Lappi during the 2024 FIA World Rally Championship season.

Mikkelsen, a three-time rally winner, previously competed for Hyundai from 2017 to 2019 but has since focused his efforts on the WRC2 category, collecting the 2021 and 2023 titles in Škoda machinery.

It is that dedication and speed which has earned the 34-year-old a seat aboard one of Hyundai’s i20 N Rally1 cars for 2024. Mikkelsen and co-driver Torstein Eriksen will alternate outings with seasoned Spaniard Dani Sordo, who starts his 11th season with the team, as well as flying Finn Esapekka Lappi.

Alongside his Rally1 commitments, Mikkelsen will also support Hyundai in the development of its WRC2 challenger – the i20 N Rally2.

Team principal Cyril Abiteboul expressed his excitement about Mikkelsen's return, acknowledging the impact he can bring to the team.

“It is exciting to see Andreas return to our squad, as he brings with him proven success and plenty of experience that will benefit us in both WRC and Rally2,” he said. “Thanks to their slightly different specialties and a huge amount of experience, the combination of Esapekka, Dani and Andreas will give us the opportunity to put the best team forward for every event to fight alongside Thierry [Neuville] and Ott [Tänak].”

Mikkelsen, whose last top-level outing came at Wales Rally GB in 2019, added: “I am very excited to come back to the top category of rallying with Hyundai Motorsport. Since 2019, we have fought hard to return to the top-flight of the sport, and I am very glad we are doing it with Hyundai. We have a big opportunity in front of us, and we will grab it with both hands and make the most out of it.”

While Mikkelsen, Sordo, and Lappi will alternate drives, Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak will both carry out full 13-round programmes as confirmed in October.
