Almost a decade since he clinched the two-wheel-drive division of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship, Aussie Chris Atkinson claimed the regional series’ biggest prize when he scooped the overall title on the China Rally Longyou.
Partnered by regular navigator Stephane Prevot, Atkinson finished second behind outgoing champion Alister McRae to put the coveted crown beyond doubt in his Team MRF Skoda Fabia Super 2000.
“This is our first overall victory in this championship, and it’s a great success for all of us,” said Atkinson. “The past years have shown how difficult it is to succeed here, and it was a big challenge for us to make it this year. I ́d like to thank all the guys for providing excellent support and preparing my car absolutely perfectly.”
Atkinson has another opportunity to showcase his talents when he contests the final round of the FIA World Rally Championship in Spain next month. Switching back to his WRC Team MINI Portugal John Cooper Works WRC, Atkinson will link up with countryman Glenn Macneall due to Prevot contesting a clashing event in New Zealand.
