Latvala will snatch the coveted spot from fifth-placed Mads Ostberg if the positions remain unchanged on Sunday, regardless of the outcome of tomorrow’s Power Stage, which awards bonus points to the fastest three drivers.
The Finn will finish on 151 points by taking second with Ostberg netting 147 points for coming home fifth. If Norwegian Ostberg scored three bonus points for winning the Power Stage and Latvala was outside the top three positions on the test, it wouldn’t be enough to overhaul Latvala.
“We still need to finish the rally and we still need to get the points so it’s not over, not yet,” said Latvala, who is contesting his final WRC event for Ford. “The Power Stage can still play a role so it’s important to do well on that. It’s a long stage and the weather could be unstable tomorrow with a possibility of rain.”
Ostberg, who slipped back from first to fifth during a frustrating second day in his privateer Fiesta, said: “It’s definitely looking difficult [for third] but it’s quite a long day tomorrow and everything is possible. We just have to carry on all the way to the end and push like hell. It’s all we can do.”
