Sheikh Khalid Al Qassimi, to give him his full title, will contest eight rounds of next year’s WRC. Al Qassimi, 40, is also an ambassador for Abu Dhabi and a mentor for the Abu Dhabi Racing project for young drivers.
He has a long association with the WRC. He initially drove a Subaru Impreza in a small number of WRC events, but he has been principally associated with Ford. The BP Ford World Rally Team had an agreement with the Abu Dhabi Tourism Board from 2007, and Al Qassimi drove a third Focus WRC, alongside Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala. His first rally was Finland, where he finished a creditable 16th place overall.
He continued driving with the team until 2011, when he enjoyed his best result: fifth in Rally Australia. He did not take part in 2012, but returns with Citroen for 2013. However, as he will once again compete in the Middle East Rally Championship in a Citroen DS3 RRC, he is not able to enter every round of the WRC.
