Neuville stays cool ahead of WRC title showdown

Long-time FIA World Rally Championship leader Thierry Neuville says he remains relaxed about the title race going down to the wire in Japan next month.

The Belgian heads to the final round with a 25-point lead over his sole rival for this year’s crown, team-mate Ott Tänak.

Leading last week’s Central European Rally at the end of the opening day, it looked like he might have the title sewn up by the end of the penultimate rally, only for a mistake on Saturday’s third stage to drop him down the order.

“We went [to CER] with the hopes of winning the drivers’ and co-drivers’ titles,” said Neuville. “A lot of supporters came down to line the stages to live an incredible moment with us, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be. When we could see the conditions on the final day, I’m not sure we would have been carrying the speed to continue to fight at the front.

"It was really tricky. For me the rally was a good operation, we have a good lead in the championship and while it would have been nice for the family and fans to celebrate with us, I’m sure they will be very happy if we finally take the title in Japan."
