WRC3 title beckons for cautious Dominguez

Diego Dominguez is not daring to dream despite being just four stages away from wrapping up the FIA World Rally Championship WRC3 title.

The Paraguayan youngster completed an error-free Saturday at Rally Chile Bio Bío to take a commanding 4min 42sec lead into Sunday. But having been in a similar position at the same time last season, the FIA Junior WRC regular is remaining understandably cautious.

“No, no way,” Dominguez stressed when asked if he was daring to dream of the championship win. “Last year was the same thing and then on the second-to-last stage the car stopped, so yeah… I have to keep my mind away from thinking about the championship and just try to get to the finish line.”

Three rally3 entrants started in Chile but when Ghjuvanni Rossi retired his Renault Clio Rally3 following one competitive stage on Friday, the category effectively turned into a battle of the Ford Fiesta Rally3s between Dominguez and Eduardo Castro.

However, it never eventuated as Castro was forced to stop on Saturday morning’s second stage, Pelun 1, to change a wheel and lost around than four minutes on Dominguez.

Frenchman Rossi restarted on Saturday but is more than 40 minutes adrift of the lead.
