Dominguez’s late charge earns Poland WRC3 win

Diego Dominguez stole the ORLEN 80th Rally Poland WRC3 victory from under the nose of Jakub Matulka, overtaking the Polish driver in the closing stages of Sunday.

Local driver Matulka had led since Thursday in his Ford Fiesta Rally3 but came under increasing pressure from Dominguez in the rally’s second half. On Saturday afternoon alone, the Paraguayan driver sliced Matulka’s lead from 21.6sec to 5.5sec.

Dominguez’s pacey run continued into Sunday’s finale, where he was again faster than his rival on all four stages. Try as he might, Matulka had no response and dropped behind on the penultimate stage, eventually settling for the runner-up spot by a mere 2.8sec.

The result extended Dominguez’s WRC3 series lead to 27 points over Mattéo Chatillon. He has contested five points-scoring rallies so far this season and may start a further two before discounting his worst result.

Poland represented a major breakthrough for Nataniel Bruun, with the Bolivian driver securing his maiden podium 47.2sec behind Matulka as well as notching up two stage wins. Chatillon, the only Renault Clio driver in a field dominated by Fiestas, placed fourth while Jan Černý completed the top five.
