Pressure mounts on Matulka in WRC3

Jakub Matulka must keep a charging Diego Dominguez at bay in ORLEN 80th Rally Poland's final day if he is to celebrate victory in WRC3 on home soil.

The 24-year-old has led this super-fast gravel fixture since the opening stage but saw his lead sliced to just 5.5sec as Dominguez mounted an attack on Saturday’s stages east of the rally’s Mikołajki base.

Matulka had been more than 20sec clear of his Paraguayan rival at lunchtime but was caught napping late in the day as Dominguez won all three stages of the repeated afternoon loop, pulling 10.1sec back in the Czarne finale alone.

“I feel very good,” Matulka maintained. “The performance is okay and I feel motivated by the amazing crowds here.”

Dominguez, who was the runner-up in last year’s FIA Junior WRC, said: “We made a couple of set-up changes with the car which felt quite good. Tomorrow will be a Super Sunday!

Dominguez’s fellow FIA Junior WRC regular Nataniel Bruun completed the all-Ford Fiesta Rally3 podium 28.0sec further back, and also claimed his first-ever stage win on the day’s opener. Behind him, and 22.3sec in arrears, was Renault Clio Rally3 driver Mattéo Chatillon.

Having dropped more than five minutes with an off-road moment early on Friday, Czech driver Jan Černý climbed inside the top five this morning - passing the similar Fiesta of Marek Roefler who ended sixth.
