Sesks stuns on Rally1 debut

Mārtiņš Sesks was speechless after learning he’d just gone second-quickest through Friday’s opening stage at ORLEN 80th Rally Poland.

The Latvian hotshot is making his top-level FIA World Rally Championship debut at this seventh round of the season, driving a non-hybrid Ford Puma Rally1 before upgrading to a hybrid-powered car for his home round next month.

Sesks and co-driver Renars Francis were quickest through the opening three sectors of Friday’s first stage at Stanczyki and reached the end of the 29.4km test just three-tenths of a second off the pace of Hyundai i20 N star Andreas Mikkelsen.

“What?!” he said in disbelief upon hearing his stage time. “There’s a video in the UK – why you coming fast? I have to think now!”

While Mikkelsen led the rally by 2.2 seconds from Sesks after SS2, there was drama for his title-hunting teammate Ott Tänak. The Estonian pulled over around 18km into the stage with damage to the front of his Hyundai.
