Romet romps to first in Junior WRC on Friday

Romet Jürgenson claimed the spoils in the opening stage and maintained consistency throughout the day to end Friday at the top of the FIA Junior WRC tree at Rally Italia Sardegna.

The young Estonian, one of a quartet of FIA Rally Star runners, currently sits top of the Junior WRC standings, 9.2sec ahead of Bolivian Bruno Bulacia.

After being slowed by tyre damage in the opening stage, Bulacia was hot on the heels of Jürgenson throughout the day, recording three stage wins in his Ford Fiesta Rally3.

Rounding out the early podium contenders is Turkish pilot Ali Türkkan, who sits 49.2sec clear of another of the FIA Rally Star program’s pilots, José Caparó, after a strong display of pace throughout the day saw the Castrol Ford Team Turkiye-backed star secure two top three stage times.

The gravel roads of Sardinia provided a rude awakening for some though, as RACB National Team-backed Tom Rensonnet was forced to retire on SS1, as well as Raúl Hernández. Both suffered impacts that dented their respective aspirations early on.

Eamonn Kelly drove SS1 in road mode in his Ford Fiesta Rally3, with the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy pilot suffering a puncture as well as water temperature problems. The Irishman recovered to finish the day in fifth however, 19.9sec ahead of Max Smart.

Last year's Junior ERC champion Norbert Maior also experienced frustration. A stop to change a wheel cost the Romanian precious time early on as he looked to build on a credible finish in Croatia, while Diego Dominguez faced similar issues.

The leading three Junior WRC drivers also locked out the podium in the battle for WRC3 honours.
