Maiden win gives Solans Italy boost

Jan Solans delivered a maiden WRC2 win for both himself and the Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 in Portugal earlier this month, a result that result has boosted his confidence ahead of next week’s Rally Italia Sardinia.

The 26-year-old, who won the 2019 Junior WRC title, switched from a Hyundai i20 N last season and has been pleased with the progress he’s made aboard Toyota’s first-ever Rally2 car.

“Portugal was a rough rally and the car was really good there,” he said. “We didn’t have any issues with the car, it was good to drive and it worked well. I feel I’m really learning to drive it faster and faster now, this is a good result and now we look forward to Sardinia.

“We know this one (Sardinia) can we a tough rally. I have been second there in the past and it’s not an easy one to win. We need to think on the plan.”

Solans’ Portugal win – and a credible eighth overall – sits him fifth in the WRC2 table ahead of the Alghero-based event. He has returned to a WRC campaign after a busy season of domestic competition in his native Spain last year.

The Spaniard will face a typically packed WRC2 entry on the Italian island with 40 Rally2 cars chasing maximum points.
