"We got the result we needed" - Neuville reflects on Portugal podium

Thierry Neuville has reflected on the great Vodafone Rally de Portugal Super Sunday performance which helped him open a big lead at the top of the FIA World Rally championship drivers’ table.

The Belgian landed 11 of a possible 12 Sunday points in Matosinhos, quadrupling his advantage over his closest championship challenger, Toyota’s Elfyn Evans.

Looking back on a fifth round of the championship, where his status as series leader had left him opening the road and sweeping the loose gravel aside for his following rivals, Neuville said: “It was a great Super Sunday for us once again – after another positive day on Friday.

“It was a very challenging and difficult weekend but we finished with the result we needed: plus another five points in the [Wolf] Power Stage. We’ve increased the lead in the championship for us by 24 points, which is a strong lead to have before Sardinia where another challenging weekend is waiting for us.

“We want to continue to push and be consistent in the car. It wasn’t the greatest Saturday, but Friday and Sunday were really good and the pace was right in the [Wolf] Power Stage, so that was promising. We will come back and fight for important points in Sardinia.”
