Dominguez distances rivals to consolidate WRC3 lead

Diego Dominguez secured four stage wins on Saturday to extend his lead at the top of the WRC3 standings at Vodafone Rally de Portugal.

A sublime display of pace ensured the Ford Fiesta Rally3 star ended the penultimate day top of the leaderboard with a sizeable 1min 49.5sec buffer over Frenchman Mattéo Chatillon.

Fellow South American runner Bruno Bulacia was similarly on the limit, as he also recorded three stage wins in the morning and sat just 2.3sec behind Dominguez at the conclusion of SS15. However, his Fiesta Rally3’s engine overheated on SS16 and the Bolivian slumped to third.

Penalty-hit Czech driver Jan Ćerny was fourth after being penalised by one minute for arriving late to the arrival control before SS10.

Chatillon’s compatriots Ghjuvanni Rossi and Tristan Charpentier completed the top six with four stages remaining on Sunday
