Naturally, the saw bit (and the chain, come to think of it) is removed before fuelling and firing the high-revving noise-maker. The atmosphere across Sunday’s Wolf Power Stage is one of the season’s absolute highlights. Spectators come from all over the world to experience the sight of cars flying fast and very far, but also the spectacle of the most ardent Portuguese fans.

There is, of course, much more to Portugal than just one stage. How, for example, could you consider ignoring the Lousada superspecial on Saturday night. Again, the emotion in the place is off the charts.

It’s the same wherever you go in Matosinhos, the locals are delighted to see you and equally keen to share their fish. Seriously, if cod and sardinies are your thing, this is the WRC round for you. Fresh doesn’t come close – as you’ll see from your seat on the beach staring out at the Atlantic.

There’s always a sense of both adventure and history with this event. The locals are hugely knowledgeable and appreciative of rallying through the ages – and they’re all delighted to share a story or two involving Markku Alén or Ari Vatanen over a cup of coffee in Arganil.

Just saying that word – Arganil – feels special.
