WRC legend Ogier knighted by President Macron

Sébastien Ogier’s remarkable achievements in the FIA World Rally Championship have been honoured, as the Frenchman was bestowed with the title of Knight in the Legion of Honour by President Emmanuel Macron this week.

The Legion of Honour stands as the highest French decoration, awarded by the Head of State to individuals who have displayed exceptional merit in service to the nation, whether in military or civilian capacities.

Presenting Ogier’s insignia on Tuesday (30th May) at the Palais de l'Elysée in Paris, President Macron said: "At such a young age, we can say that you [Ogier] are a legend in your sport, that you have helped to inspire so many young people to follow in your footsteps, and you are one of those few who can indeed claim to have truly carried the colours of France to the top of their discipline and inspired, already, so many successive generations.

“In fact, dear Sébastien, more than just an ace at the wheel, you have everything it takes to inspire our young people: excellence, bravery, panache, a spirit of equity and fair play. So, for playing a part in making our sporting culture shine, for this unique career path and the commitments you have already started to make, and which I know you will continue to make, I am delighted this evening to present you with the insignia of Knight of the Legion of Honour.”

Ogier stands as one of the WRC’s most successful drivers, securing a total of eight world titles between 2013 and 2021.

The 40-year-old has triumphed in an impressive 59 rallies, graced the podium 100 times and notched up over 700 stage wins throughout his illustrious career. He remains an integral part of the Toyota Gazoo Racing line-up and forms part of a four-car GR Yaris entry for Vodafone Rally de Portugal next week (9 – 12 May).

“It's a great honour to experience a moment like this,” he said. “In the life of a French citizen, it's something you never imagine happening. I know that it's reserved for a very select group of athletes who have represented the country at the highest level, and that makes me all the more honoured. It's the kind of moment that stands out in a career, and I know that my meeting with the President will remain engraved in my memory.”
