Championship leader Neuville had built up a 10.1sec advantage in his Hyundai i20 N but saw almost all of that time disappear in Ravna Gora - Skrad 2, the second stage on Friday afternoon.
He picked up tyre damage after clipping a rock in the final sector, dropping vital seconds as he limped to the end of the stage. Evans, second in the points before this round, won the stage and closed the gap.
“There was a stone in the road which I tried to avoid, but I must have been too close. It immediately damaged the tyre.”
