Kalle launches 2024 campaign with WRC Rally Sweden warm-up

Toyota stars Kalle Rovanperä and Elfyn Evans will contest this week’s Arctic Rally Lapland in preparation for the second round of the FIA World Rally Championship in Sweden.

The GR Yaris Rally1 pair tackle the two-day Rovaniemi-based event in search of the perfect set-up for the WRC’s winter qualifier later this month. Both drivers are familiar with rallying in the Arctic Circle – Rovanperä won the event at the top of his first season aboard a Yaris WRC in 2020 and both competed in the rally’s two-year stay on the world championship calendar.

The Finnish event marks Rovanperä’s maiden outing in a GR Yaris Rally1 this season, while Evans headed north directly from his Rallye Monte-Carlo podium on Sunday.

There were no Toyotas on the podium in Umeå for last year’s Rally Sweden – a situation the team is keen to avoid this time around.

“It’s fair to say last year didn’t go to plan for us,” said Evans. “Arctic is a good chance for us to find a good feeling and good set-up ahead of Sweden. Any time you have the chance to drive the car on a specific-type event like this, it’s important to take it.”

In addition to the event, Evans, Rovanperä and Takamoto Katsuta will conduct a single day of testing at the squad’s own site in central Finland.

Team principal Jari-Matti Latvala joins his two drivers, but he will be running his own Toyota Celica Turbo 4WD on the event which runs through Friday and Saturday.
