Cais: CER pace ‘good for my head’

A WRC2 podium at Central European Rally was good for Erik Cais’ mental health, the Czech youngster says.

The 24-year-old Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 driver achieved his best-ever result in the FIA World Rally Championship’s leading support category, finishing second to Nicolas Ciamin by just over half a minute. Cais had started Sunday just 2.6sec adrift of the victor but wound back his speed after losing ground to the Frenchman in the first test of the day.

Cais has started five WRC rounds this season but incidents in Croatia and Portugal prevented him from mounting a serious title challenge. Rounding out his campaign with a top-two result, though, has provided the youngster with a welcomed boost.

“It’s definitely a good point in my head,” he told, “because a lot of things happened this year [when we were in] good positions. Some punctures and stuff like that, which is not making your mental health very good in the car. I’m really, really proud of us and the team that we made it now."

Cais, who hails from the Czech Republic, achieved a childhood dream by being the first driver to cross the start ramp in Czech capital Prague.

Talking about the home support, he added: “It was definitely pure emotions for the whole week. It was absolutely incredible, and I have to say thanks to all of the spectators.

“On the night stages with all the lights and everything it was just like Monte-Carlo. We really enjoyed our home round and we really appreciate the support.”
