Corrado Provera: 1941 - 2023

The WRC family is saddened to hear of the passing of former Peugeot Sport director Corrado Provera.

The Italian was 82. Provera began his career working for Chrysler and remained within the structure as it moved through Talbot and into Peugeot. After starting in public relations, he moved into management and ultimately sat on the board of Peugeot.

He became Peugeot Sport director in 1998 and took the decision to move the brand out of Formula 1 and into the FIA World Rally Championship. The 206 World Rally Car was born and delivered success immediately. The Velizy-based squad dominated the next three years, landing a hat-trick of manufacturer titles and two out of three drivers’ crowns with Marcus Grönholm.

The Finn remembered his boss fondly, saying: “He and I were very similar, we were always pushing very hard – me from behind the wheel and him from behind his table. We worked well together. He was always somebody who was looking after everybody in the team. He used to say he had a lion on his heart and this was true – he was all about Peugeot.”

In a statement, Peugeot Sport said: “It is with great regret that we learn of the passing of Corrado Provera. His years at the head of Peugeot Sport were marked by his charisma and energy. We send our sincere condolences to his family and all those who knew him.”

Provera retired from Peugeot in February, 2005.
