Ciamin hopes CER triumph leads to more rallies in 2024

Nicolas Ciamin is setting his sights on an expanded FIA World Rally Championship programme in 2024 after taking his maiden WRC2 at Central European Rally last Sunday.

Ciamin, who hails from France, has contested four WRC2 rallies this season. After switching from a Volkswagen Polo to the latest-specification Škoda Fabia RS Rally2 for last week’s tri-country fixture he netted victory by 32.7sec alongside co-driver Yannick Roche.

Budget permitting, the 25-year-old would like to carry out a full assault on the series in 2024. Should that not be financially possible, however, a combination of WRC2 and WRC3 outings could be on the cards.

Speaking with WRC.com at the finish of CER, Ciamin said: “I hope next year I can do a full WRC2 season. That’s what we are working on, but at the moment I don’t know.

“If I don’t have the money to do the full season [in WRC2], maybe I will do some gravel rounds with a Rally3 car and go back to the Rally2 car for the Tarmac events. That could help us to take some experience on gravel and it would be less expensive.”

At present there are two models available to drivers competing in WRC3. M-Sport Poland’s Ford Fiesta Rally3 is currently the most popular choice of machinery for the category, although Renault’s Clio Rally3 - launched earlier this year – is also a serious contender.

“I don’t know,” Ciamin responded when asked which car he’d be more likely to use. “The Renault, I think, is fast, but for the moment in WRC we have not seen it [used] much on gravel. I think we need to look at it much further.”
