Enjoyment is the aim for Fourmaux in Japan

Adrien Fourmaux will go to FORUM8 Rally Japan (16 – 19 November) with a clear focus on enjoying the experience on his return to Rally1 competition.

Having spent this year driving one of M-Sport’s Ford Fiesta Rally2 cars in WRC2, the Frenchman has been handed the opportunity to replace Pierre-Louis Loubet in the British team’s second Puma Rally1 at the final round of the season.

But Fourmaux, who contested 10 rounds aboard a Puma in 2022, is keeping his expectations in check for his top-flight return. Unlike many of his rivals, the 28-year-old has not competed in Japan before and will not have the opportunity to complete a pre-event test.

“When you are in the Rally1 car everybody is watching you, so for sure there is going to be some pressure,” he told WRC.com. “But I just want to do my own rally and we will see where we are.

“We will not be testing for Japan and the other guys have done the rally last year. I haven’t done the rally so it will be a big challenge, but I just want to enjoy it. It’s like a big present for me.”

Fourmaux revealed how the opportunity came as a surprise when, after securing the British Rally Championship title, he received a phone call from M-Sport chairman Malcolm Wilson.

“The process was quite short,” he explained. “After we won the British title, Malcolm just called me but there was no discussion beforehand.

“He called me and said he wanted me to do Japan after the good season I have done with M-Sport. I said ‘okay, thank you’ - and now here we are!”
