Joona and Hussi confirm full WRC2 programme for 2024

Lauri Joona and co-driver Janni Hussi have today (Thursday) confirmed plans to carry out a full assault on the WRC2 championship in 2024.

Twenty-six-year-old Joona steered a Ford Fiesta Rally3 to the WRC3 title in 2022 before upgrading to Škoda Fabia Rally2 machinery for this season, where he has contested selected WRC2 and FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) rounds as well several national rallies in his native Finland.

The man from Sastamala will up the ante once more in 2024 when he tackles a full seven-round programme within WRC2, the FIA World Rally Championship’s premier support category. Hussi, who has guided Joona on two ERC rounds this year, will become his full-time co-driver.

“WRC2 is a tough class where every special stage must be done perfectly,” Joona said. “And that is what we are aiming for.

“Janni has really quickly mastered the work of a co-driver and there is a good team spirit in the car, which is very important in a rally. We are united by a positive attitude and enthusiasm for rallying,” he added.

Hussi's journey into the world of co-driving has been nothing short of extraordinary.

It all began with a playful remark she made during her time as a radio host, where she jokingly questioned just how challenging the role of a co-driver could be. Little did she know, her quip would lead to an unexpected response from former FIA Junior WRC champion and current WRC2 frontrunner Sami Pajari, who extended an offer to put her skills to the test.

Fast forward 14 months, Hussi has now partnered stars including ex-Formula 1 racer Heikki Kovalainen and is fully committed to her burgeoning career as a co-driver.

“It all started from a joke in my former job on a morning radio show. Six months later, I gave up my job to do rally, and here we are,” she explained. “Lauri is really easy to work with and we have gotten to know each other well. It is especially rewarding to be able to drive with a skilful driver who knows what to do and has achieved success in rallying. This also develops a lot of my own skills.”
