Evans avoiding championship title talk

Toyota Gazoo Racing star Elfyn Evans has put his World Rally Championship chances out of his head as he goes in search of a third win of the season at this week’s Rally Chile Bio Bío.

The Welshman starts the Concepción-based event 33 points behind team-mate Kalle Rovanperä, but with the psychological boost of edging the Finn on Thursday’s shakedown.

“All we can do is our best,” said Evans.

“It’s the same as every other event, we’ll just get out there and drive the car. “Shakedown went well and the feeling is good in the car, but there’s no point thinking beyond the end of this rally. [For the championship] Let’s see what happens. This is going to be a tricky event, there’s lots of variation in the roads and it’s slightly more complicated without a specific test.”

Evans added that lack of a pre-event preparation made it more difficult to find the right set-up.

“It is kind of hard to know,” he said. “Like I said the conditions do vary, especially between Friday and Saturday, you kind of need something different from the car on those two days.

“We know what Kalle [Rovanperä’s] capable of in these conditions, but we’ll go and do the best we can.”

Evans has finished runner-up in the world championship for two of the last three years.
