Mixed emotions for Greece runner-up Evans

Elfyn Evans talked of his mixed feelings after his second place at last week’s EKO Acropolis Rally Greece.

The Welshman keeps his championship challenge alive and will carry the fight to Toyota team-mate Kalle Rovanperä into Rally Chile later this month. Having taken 30 points out of the Finn at last month’s Secto Rally Finland, seeing eight of those head in the opposite direction in Lamia wasn’t what he wanted.

“It was a bit bitter-sweet,” said Evans. “I guess the bigger picture is the championship, where Kalle extended his lead again – from that side of things I’m not so pleased. But on the other hand we managed some issues on Saturday, fought with Dani [Sordo] to keep second place and the championship’s still alive.

“For us it was a pretty up and down weekend. Kalle was strong again, congratulations to him. Obviously, we’re going to continue to give it everything. Chile next, that was a nice rally last time we were there. Let’s see.”

Evans was quick to praise the Toyota team for its progression from last season’s difficult Acropolis Rally.

“It’s been a big leap forward from where we were last year, an incredible result for the team with this one-two and I think that’s credit to all the hard work which has been done.”
