Perfect Dominguez keeps WRC3 title fight alive

Diego Dominguez scored a dominant victory in the all-Ford Fiesta Rally3 WRC3 category at EKO Acropolis Rally Greece to keep alive his hopes of winning the 2023 championship.

The Paraguayan backed up his win on this very same rally 12 months ago by completing the weekend almost seven minutes clear of second-placed Eamonn Kelly, who was able to hold his position despite suffering transmission issues on the final day.

It was a cautious approach for Dominguez on Sunday, knowing his destiny was in his own hands.

"It's been a great weekend for us," Dominguez beamed. "I think we've been much faster than anybody anticipated and I think we did our best rally so far.

"This was definitely the best rally I've done in my life, keeping up the pace for the whole weekend. We are very, very happy and this is only the beginning - it's our first season in WRC," he added.

Taking third was Belgium’s Tom Rensonnet, who had been locked in a capitivating battle with Peruvian Eduardo Castro for the final step on the podium. He eventually held on by 20.9sec.

Dominguez has triumped in Mexico, Kenya and Greece so far this year. Victory in Chile next month would leave him tied on a perfect 100 points with Finland’s Roope Korhonen, the current championship leader.
