Why Suninen is the smart choice for Hyundai

There’s always something special about another Finn in Finland. Even more so when they’re a Finn living in Estonia. Teemu Suninen must be rubbing his hands, with two ‘home’ rallies coming up this summer.

There’s always something exciting about Suninen climbing aboard a full factory manufacturer car. He’s a driver who can deliver extraordinary speed. Remember Tempio Pausania first time through in 2020’s autumnal Rally Italia Sardegna? How could you forget?

Teemu’s Ford Fiesta WRC was a second per kilometer faster than anybody else. That on what was recognised as one of the event’s trickest and most technical stages.

The year before on the same Italian island, he’d run Dani Sordo a close second in the fight for his first-ever WRC win.

But this story’s about fast rallies, so let’s pop back a couple more years to a stunning sixth overall on his World Rally Car debut in Poland. A month later and he was winning stages at the very highest level in his own backyard of Rally Finland.

Suninen’s pace and potential is huge. Hyundai Motorsport’s decision to draft the popular 29-year-old in alongside Thierry Neuville and Esapekka Lappi is as exciting as it is understandable. When it comes to the fastest of the fastest, Finns have a fairly solid track record and what’s better than having a Finn in your team when you’re bound for Jyväsklylä?

Having two Finns in your team, that’s what!
