Everyone a threat in JWRC, Creighton warns

FIA Junior WRC leader William Creighton is determined to avoid complacency after extending his points advantage last week at Rally Italia Sardegna.

The Motorsport Island Rally Academy driver claimed a dominant win at the Mediterranean island event, heading home Diego Dominguez by almost two minutes in what was a turbulent rally for the entire M-Sport Poland Ford Fiesta Rally3 field.

Creighton’s triumph moved him and co-driver Liam Regan 32 points clear at the top with two rounds remaining. However, with the allure of bonus points for each stage win, and the prospect of double points being awarded at the finale in Greece, the 25-year-old shows no signs of relenting.

“I'm not sure exactly what [the points situation] is but I'm sure there will be a gap there now,” Creighton told WRC.com. “The way this championship is structured, to be honest, everyone is a threat.

“With the stage win points there are still so many points up for grabs at the next two rounds. We just need to keep doing what we're doing and hopefully get some strong results.”

Creighton added that Italy had been the most demanding rally of his career. Only two of the eight FIA Junior WRC entrants finished without utilising restart rules, while Creighton himself faced the challenge of wheel damage in several stages.

“It was the most difficult rally I've ever done, I think,” he said. “It was a rollercoaster. You got one puncture and you thought, ‘okay, that's us out of contention’. And then you face another crazy stage and the whole thing turns on its head again.

“That happened several times during the rally, so it was kind of just who was going to be in the lead after the final stage, that was the only way you were guaranteed of the win.”
