Creighton repels Dominguez despite Junior WRC drama

William Creighton remains on course to strengthen his FIA Junior WRC title bid, ending Rally Italia Sardegna’s penultimate leg comfortably clear in the one-make Ford Fiesta Rally3 series.

Despite stopping twice to change punctures on the previous day, the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy youngster entered Saturday already 55.0sec clear of nearest challenger Diego Dominguez.

But, on a day when the Mediterranean island fixture appeared to be showing its more benign side, Creighton came unstuck in the afternoon - struck once again by tyre troubles in SS13. He slipped behind Dominguez, but only momentarily as his Paraguayan rival suffered issues of his own in the following two stages.

Entering Sunday’s four-stage finale with a lead of 2min 18.5sec, Creighton is poised to clinch his second triumph of the 2023 campaign. Victory here would see the 25-year-old retain his championship lead with just two rounds remaining.

Laurent Pellier sat third overall heading into the penultimate test having racked up a mighty four bonus points for collectin stage wins, but the Frenchman pulled over with a mechanical issue after 18.7km.

Tom Rensonnet, who had been fourth, also retired in the stage, enabling Spain’s Roberto Blach to complete the podium ahead of Irishman Eamonn Kelly.
