Czech youngster Kohn has one eye on the future

Filip Kohn’s participation in this year’s WRC3 series forms part of a long-term plan, with the Czech hotshot eyeing a switch to FIA Junior WRC in 2024.

Kohn will contest six WRC3 rounds this year aboard his own Ford Fiesta Rally3. His season got underway on the snow and ice of Rally Sweden, where he finished ninth in the category after rolling, and resumes at next week’s Croatia Rally (20 - 23 April).

But the 20-year-old, who is only in his third year of rallying, is already eyeing his next move; the FIA Junior WRC - a one-make series which utilises Fiestas just like the one he’s already driving.

“This year we are planning to do most of the rallies which are also in the Junior WRC calendar,” Kohn told WRC.com. “After Croatia we will go to Sardinia and Estonia, but we will do Finland instead of Greece. We are also thinking about the Central European Rally,” he added, referencing the all-new tri-country fixture which visits his homeland in October.

“It was better for me to do the WRC3 championship this year. There’s no pressure to win anything this year, it’s just about learning the rallies and looking where we are. We have the same car [as the Junior WRC crews], so it’s good to compare the times.

“Now, with where we are at, I think that we will do a year in WRC3 and then next year Junior WRC, and maybe some WRC2.”

While many of today's up-and-coming drivers have rallying in their blood, Kohn is forging a new path for his family, who don't have a background in the sport. He's sought guidance from fellow countryman Jan Černý, who finished as the WRC3 runner-up in 2022, to help him navigate the WRC's unique challenges.

“Jan has a bunch of rallies behind him, and I have like 15,” he explained. “He has a lot of experience and he comes with me on the WRC rallies to help me get the best result.”

Kohn was one of several WRC regulars in action at the Quattro River Rally earlier this month, a warm-up for next week’s WRC counter in Zagreb. He and co-driver Tomáš Střeska finished an impressive seventh overall, 40.5sec ahead of next-placed Rally3 driver Tom Rensonnet.
