Belgium's Rensonnet aims to build on FIA Junior WRC debut

Belgium's rising star Tom Rensonnet is looking to build on his impressive debut in the FIA Junior WRC at the Croatia Rally later this month.

The asphalt fixture, which runs from 20 - 23 April, plays host to round two of the hotly contested one-make M-Sport Poland Ford Fiesta Rally3 series. Rensonnet finished seventh at the season-opener in Sweden.

Unlike Rally Sweden, which uses snow and ice-covered roads, the asphalt surfaces in Croatia will be more familiar to Rensonnet, who hails from Belgium where tarmac rallies are the norm.

“The target is always to finish the rally because we are here to learn, but of course I am expecting it to be a bit more comfortable for me because I know the road surface,” he admitted.

“It should be a little bit easier for me in that way, but the target is the same - to finish the rally and improve stage by stage."

While Rensonnet feels more at home on the sealed-surface stages, he acknowledges that the Croatian roads pose due own unique challenge due to their narrow and technical nature.

“In Belgium, it’s like straight for 200 metres, then turn right - it’s a bit less technical," he said. “It may be different from Belgium, but we will see.”

Rensonnet contested last week’s Quattro River Rally in Croatia in preparation for the WRC fixture, finishing eighth overall with co-driver Loïc Dumont alongside – almost four minutes quicker than Junior WRC rival Eamonn Kelly.

A number of the stages that featured in last week’s rally will again be on the rally route later this month at Croatia Rally.
