Greensmith’s Mexico warm-up hampered by snow

Gus Greensmith’s preparations for Guanajuato Rally México (16 - 19 March) took an unexpected turn when he encountered snowy conditions in a warm-up event last weekend.

The British driver, who is set to begin his WRC2 campaign this month with a Toksport-prepared Škoda Fabia Rally2, entered Portugal's Rali Vieira do Minho to prepare for the gravel fixture.

Mexico is expected to be a hot and dusty affair, but the conditions Greensmith faced in Portugal couldn’t have been further opposite - with snow and heavy rain descending on the two-day event.

Starting almost 50 cars ahead of the next Rally2 competitor on the road, Greensmith was forced to act as a snow plough for the early stages.

“The rally for sure was not as similar conditions as we'd hoped,” said the 26-year-old, who eventually finished second overall. “I spent the morning being a snow plough, but in the afternoon it was just wet.

“Anyway - we got to do some running and some learning, and the car is feeling good, so I'm happy in that respect. We've got two more days of testing lined up in Mexico, and then we'll be ready to start the rally.”
