Sesks reveals Rally1 dream for home country's WRC debut

Mārtiņš Sesks has revealed his aspirations to drive a Rally1 car when Tet Rally Latvia - his home event - makes its debut in next year’s FIA World Rally Championship.

It was confirmed last week that the high-speed gravel fixture will form part of the 2024 WRC calendar, building on its success within the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) in recent years.

It’s a significant milestone for Sesks, who has lived in long-time host city Liepāja all his life. He dominated last year’s edition by winning every single stage, clinching his maiden ERC rally win.

"Rallying in the Liepāja region is a family thing," he told WRC.com. "My grandfather started the rally in 1965, and then, after 59 years, it's a WRC event. To be a part of the family which has done the rally for three generations, that's something special."

Sesks is no stranger to success on the rally stages. He finished second in the FIA Junior WRC in 2020 and third in 2021, while this season he is undertaking a full FIA European Rally Championship campaign in a Škoda Fabia RS Rally2.

With his home WRC round now on the horizon, Sesks has revealed plans to try and secure a drive in a top-level Rally1 car for the event.

“That's a dream, and you know, sometimes dreams come true,” said the 23-year-old. "This time last year, I wasn't expecting anything, and as the year has gone by, we have won an ERC event, and we are now looking to have the best package for a full season in ERC. I think anything is possible.

“For sure, we will try [to secure a Rally1 drive]," he said. "We will definitely try to be at our home event, even if it's in Rally2 or Rally1. At the moment, we can only speculate, but it would be cool.

He added, “I think it would be the best time to do this. It will be my home event, and the first WRC round in Latvia. There will be a big hype around it, so I think there's no better time to try that.”
