Creighton eclipses Korhonen on Friday’s final WRC3 test

Fast-finishing William Creighton has taken the overnight WRC3 lead at Rally Sweden, overhauling Roope Korhonen on Friday’s final stage.

Under the darkness of the night, Irishman Creighton went on a charge - turning what had been a 12.4sec deficit after SS6 into a 2.4sec overnight lead by close of play.

Creighton had started the day at the head of the all-Ford Fiesta Rally3 category before giving up the lead to Finnish rival Korhonen on the final stage of the morning loop. As his lead went beyond the 10sec mark, it appeared that Korhonen would remain in front going into Saturday. But a lack of experience at WRC3 level compared to Creighton appeared telling as Korhonen fell off the pace late in the day.

Making his Scandinavian debut, 2022 FIA Junior ERC champion Laurent Pellier looked at home on the snow and ice of Sweden. He comfortably held on to third position, 34.5sec behind Creighton and 50.3sec clear of Paraguay’s Diego Dominguez.

Rounding out the top five was Belgian debutant Tom Rensonnet, who is tackling on his first non-asphalt rally.
