Wilson Ott has what it takes in Sweden

M-Sport managing director Malcolm Wilson says he can see no reason why Ott Tänak can’t challenge for Rally Sweden victory this week.

While the Estonian has been more measured in his predictions for what to expect from his second outing in a Ford Puma Hybrid Rally1, the Briton’s happy with what he saw from the 2019 world champion at Rallye Monte-Carlo and at last week’s Otepää Rally.

Wilson said: “I don’t see any reason why we can’t challenge for the win in Sweden. We know the Toyotas will be strong in Sweden, we’ve seen what they’re capable of – but we’ve got Ott Tänak.

“OK, he’s still getting to know the car and getting comfortable, the rally at [his] home in Estonia helped with that last week. Maybe the win in Sweden is asking a little bit much, but let’s see. I’d like to think we’re not going to be far away [in Sweden].”

Tänak, who scored his maiden win in the Puma in Otepää, admitted he was happy with the speed of the car on snow, but he was guarded on in any prediction of a repeat of his 2019 victory in Sweden.

“The confidence is coming gradually,” said Tänak. “We took some more experience of the conditions [on Saturday] and now we’ll see how far away we are from the perfect set-up.

“Personally, I feel more confident on snow, so we need to see how we compare to the other guys. Let’s see what the conditions are like, but I think it’s too early to be talking about the result!”
