Camilli working towards WRC return

Former M-Sport Ford driver Eric Camilli insists he hasn’t given up on his aim of returning to a permanent FIA World Rally Championship drive.

The Frenchman dominated the early stages of last year’s WRC2 battle in Rallye Monte-Carlo, only to fall foul of a patch of ice aboard a Citroën C3 R5. After a quiet 2022, he’s working on a way back this season.

“I am training to be back,” he said. “I will do the French Championship this season and aim to be back [in WRC2] in 2024. The competition [in the French Championship] is really high, which is good for the level in the world championship.”

Camilli was closely associated with M-Sport for four years, driving a factory Ford Fiesta RS WRC in 2016 before switching to a WRC2 programme, where he won a round and finished second in the title race in 2017. Since then he’s worked on the development of cars like Citroën’s C3 R5 and Volkswagen’s Polo R5.

The 35-year-old added: “I have good experience in WRC2 and so many of the cars I developed are winning events now. My passion for the sport is the same like it always was. It is frustrating that I didn’t get the opportunity in WRC2, but I’m sure it will come and I will work to make it come for next season.”
