The American driver had been running 12th overall in the ultra-competitive WRC2 category, however, he lost control of his Citroën C3 Rally2 on a right-hander near the end of SS17 and slammed into a rock face.
Both Johnston and co-driver Alex Kihurani were unharmed in the incident but the impact caused sever damage to the car - even ripping off the rear-left wheel.
"Not the way we wanted to end this weekend," expressed a dejected Johnston to WRC TV. "It has been a character building."
