Watch: Johnston shunts Citroën at Rallye Monte-Carlo

Sean Johnston's hopes of finishing Rallye Monte-Carlo were dashed when he crashed heavily on Sunday morning.

The American driver had been running 12th overall in the ultra-competitive WRC2 category, however, he lost control of his Citroën C3 Rally2 on a right-hander near the end of SS17 and slammed into a rock face.

Both Johnston and co-driver Alex Kihurani were unharmed in the incident but the impact caused sever damage to the car - even ripping off the rear-left wheel.

"Not the way we wanted to end this weekend," expressed a dejected Johnston to WRC TV. "It has been a character building."
