Kalle: More to come on asphalt

Despite a stunning final-stage win on last year’s Croatia Rally, defending World Rally Champion Kalle Rovanperä feels there’s more pace to come from his Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 on asphalt.

Asked to identify areas where he could improve ahead of his second season aboard the GR Yaris Rally1, the 22-year-old Finn admitted he was happy with the car and the consistency he showed last season. But he still wanted more from the Tarmac rounds.

“Maybe I wasn’t adapting to the car on Tarmac in the best way,” he said. “When I’m driving I always have to have the car really suiting me. There are always areas where you can improve and take more performance, but I think last year was quite good – we were quite consistent.

“When the car is working, I have also been driving quite fast, that’s important.”

Of the remaining three asphalt rallies in 2022, Rovanperä scored a podium third place in Spain. He crashed in Belgium and was forced to stop and change a puncture after hitting a rock face in Japan.

Next week's Rallye Monte-Carlo (19 - 22 January) could provide an early opportunity for Rovanperä to demonstrate greater asphalt pace with the Yaris, if the French Alps classic offers largely dry conditions similar to last season.
