How the WRC champion is spending his winter break

After winning one title, six rallies, 70 stages and 255 points, Kalle Rovanperä can smile. His work is done. It’s holiday time.

And the 22-year-old history-maker has very firm plans about how he intends to relax. By going sideways. Very sideways.

Rovanperä remained in Japan with the rest of his Toyota Gazoo Racing team-mates, working closely with Toyota on PR and promotional materials throughout the week following the 2022 season finale.

But with that done, he’s now heading out of Toyota City - bound for another town and another Toyota.

“I’m looking forward to the break,” Rovanperä said. “It’s been quite a long season and [Rally] Japan was quite tough, so it’s nice to get to the holiday mode.

“Some of my friends are flying out here and we’re going to go drifting for a while – it’s going to be good. They have a lot of really nice drift tracks out here. It’s a good way to relax and enjoy myself.”

More of a busman’s holiday then – but Rovanperä’s never really been the lie on his back with a book on the beach kind of guy. He’s all about the action.

“We start to think about next year soon,” said the champion, “and we know we have some work to do, but now it’s time to relax a little bit and do some more normal stuff.”
