Tänak ready for ‘first’ real Spain assault with Hyundai

Ott Tänak is looking forward to completing his first full Spanish round of the FIA World Rally Championship since sealing his title with Toyota in Salou three years ago.

The Estonian crashed out on the first afternoon of last year’s event and RallyRACC - Rally de España wasn’t on the calendar in 2020. Before that, second place on the 2019 rally was enough to secure him a maiden FIA World Rally Championship crown.

“I haven’t been [on the full event] for a long time,” he said. “It’ll be interesting to see how we go – it’s going to be very different to Ypres.

"The level of grip in Spain will be higher, this week it’s a pure Tarmac event. You need to go to this event with a good balance in the car. It’s going to be nice to get to a pure Tarmac event.

“We know the nature of these stages, the long corners which can give some understeer from the car – we will have to make sure have the set-up with the car correct.”

First and second places in Belgium and Croatia respectively have given Tänak confidence ahead of the penultimate round of this year’s series.

“We showed how good our Tarmac package is in Croatia and Belgium and our aim is to continue that streak. I’m expecting a fun and enjoyable rally, but it is also quite important for us to be competitive and fight for as many points as possible.”
