M-Sport star Breen to sample Ford Lotus Cortina

Craig Breen will take a break from the cut and thrust of WRC action to step back in time and tackle a touring car race at this weekend’s Goodwood Revival in England.

Just days after bringing his M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 home in fifth overall at EKO Acropolis Rally Greece, Breen will debut a historic Ford Lotus Cortina at the globally-renowned race meeting.

“As most people know, I’m quite a fan of the historic stuff and this is a great opportunity,” said the Irishman. “I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve heard a lot about the Revival and the way they do everything, so I’m sure it’ll be a good weekend.

“I’ve done some racing before. I was doing a lot of karting earlier in my career, so it won’t be the first time I’ve had cars either side of me and the Lotus Cortina’s a fairly iconic car from its day.”

Breen’s Goodwood entry comes a week on from a superb recovery drive at the FIA World Rally Championship’s 10th round. The 32-year-old dropped more than two minutes when he stopped to change a wheel during Friday’s opening leg but fought back to finish fifth.

After a tough summer, Breen felt the Lamia-based event offered something of a breakthrough.

“I’ve tried all sorts of approaches,” he said. “I’ve tried everything. I think the way forward is to relax and not think about it too much. After the puncture, that’s what I did.

“Paul [Nagle, co-driver] and myself, we just drove the car and let everything else look after itself. The car was perfect and I honestly felt really positive coming away from Greece.”
