Kalle: It’s not over until it’s over

Kalle Rovanperä is taking nothing for granted in his pursuit of this year’s FIA World Rally Championship title.

The 21-year-old Finn crashed out of the opening day of Ypres Rally Belgium earlier this month and that accident served as a timely reminder that, while he is 72 points in the clear, nothing is won yet.

Rovanperä needs to finish next week’s EKO Acropolis Rally Greece (8 - 11 September) with at least 90 points in hand over his nearest rival to be crowned champion in Lamia.

That would mean outscoring Ott Tänak by at least 19 points and Toyota Gazoo Racing team-mate Elfyn Evans by just three. Rovanperä remains cautious about his chances – despite netting five wins from nine rallies this year.

“Nothing is over until it’s over,” he said. “I’m not going to think about it. I will just continue to try to score good points and take good results from the rallies which are coming. Of course, the lead is good and it’s nice – but at the moment it’s still a lead and not a championship title.

“What happened in Belgium can happen. You are always trying to be perfect and to make the perfect rally, but the mistakes can happen sometimes. We have seen that and we try to avoid that in the future.”

Hot, dry conditions in Greece could make Greece a tough one for the championship leader. But Rovanperä does hold good memories from the event and, on his Acropolis debut last year, he took a dominant 42.1sec victory.

“First on the road,” he mused. “If the weather stays dry, it could be tricky to open the road – but don’t forget the other guys like Ott and the rest are just behind, so hopefully it’s not so much better for them!”
