Latvala reveals wishes for 2023

Toyota Gazoo Racing team principal Jari-Matti Latvala says he would like to continue running a shared third GR Yaris Rally1 for Sébastien Ogier and Esapekka Lappi into next season.

Ogier has only started three rounds so far this year but is expected to feature more in the coming months and has already expressed a desire to return to Rallye Monte-Carlo at the top of the 2023 season.

While Lappi would be keen to return to a full programme of WRC rounds, Latvala said he’s doing the perfect job for the team.

Asked about next year’s line-up, Latvala said: “For me, it would be the ideal situation to continue with the same drivers for next year. Séb is still a very, very fast driver – he’s an eight-time world champion and there are some events, like Monte-Carlo, where he is really, really strong. But also there are places where EP (Lappi) is strong: Finland, Estonia and in Ypres he was also making the podium.

“The combination we have now, with two cars [for Kalle Rovanperä and Elfyn Evans] and the [shared] third car and Takamoto [Katsuta] in a fourth Yaris is a nice one.

“We have to discuss these things and think about everything.”

Toyota has been the season’s dominant force so far, with a GR Yaris Rally1 on every podium except in Italy. The Finnish-based team leads the manufacturers’ championship by 88 points.
