Wahome on cusp of WRC3 glory

Maxine Wahome is six stages away from a maiden WRC3 victory, carrying a hefty 14min 55sec advantage into the final day of action at Safari Rally Kenya.

Following a late retirement on Friday night which saw her incur a 10-minute penalty and relinquish the lead to Mcrae Kimathi, Wahome did not have to wait too long to go back on top on Saturday morning despite some troubles of her own.

The Kenyan had a scare on the morning’s opening stage Soysambu 1, when she experienced a computer issue in her Ford Fiesta Rally4, seeing her lose six minutes. However, FIA Junior WRC regular Kimathi struck a rock in the line on the same stage nearing the 15km mark, sustaining significant rear and front suspension damage, bringing an abrupt end to his day.

The demise of Kimathi left Wahome nearly 20min clear of her next closest rival Hamza Anwar. With such a hefty lead, Wahome avoided taking any risks for the remainder of Saturday, successfully navigating the challenging five remaining tests.

Jeremy Wahome holds on to third spot going into the final day, 29min 19sec back. Kimathi will restart on Sunday in fourth position.
