The 40-year-old has made his name as one of the safest pair of hands in the service park, and, if you could pick your own WRC line-up, he’d probably be the one you’d trust most with bringing home the points.
In Sardinia, he did it again. Okay - we didn’t get to witness Sordo score a third victory on the Mediterranean event - but he should be applauded. After finishing third in the previous three rallies he’s started, you could say it’s becoming a bit of a habit.
Hyundai Motorsport won’t mind, though - his points at the weekend helped them move back into the Manufacturers’ title fight and they now trail Toyota by 39 points as the season approaches its midpoint.
“Third is not nice anymore, I want more,” quipped the Spaniard. “No, I’m joking. It was nice to finish third because Ott was taking the victory.
“At one point on Saturday, it was hard to take Breen because he was pushing very quick. At the end, we didn’t want to even try because he was 20sec ahead and in a short time it would have been difficult.
“It was the decision of us all, both myself and the team. If you are clever and you think about, it’s the right decision to not risk everything for one place,” he added.
Hyundai’s hybrid-powered i20 N has come on in leaps and bounds since the season opener at Rallye Monte-Carlo, with Sordo believing there’s still more to come before he feels as at home as he did in last year’s World Rally Car.
“I am feeling more at home in the car, but not yet like before. Obviously, in all the rallies I do I will try to do my best and fight for the top positions,” he explained.
For now, though, we’ll have to wait for EKO Acropolis Rally Greece (8 - 9 September) before we see Sordo back on the stages.
“My next one is the Acropolis. I have holidays now - after two rallies, I need to rest. I am 40, you know,” he laughed.
“I’ll wait until there. It’s up to the team to have decent preparation and we try and take points with Ott and Thierry for the Drivers’ championship. I want to see my team going up.”
