Cerny handed WRC3 lifeline to claim victory

Czech Republic’s Jan Černý was handed a lifeline to claim victory in WRC3 at Rally Italia Sardegna after overnight leader Diego Dominguez failed to restart on Sunday morning.

It looked like Černý would be forced to settle for second in his Ford Fiesta Rally3 after losing over four minutes to Dominguez on Saturday with an electrical issue during the second pass of Coiluna – Loelle.

However, Paraguayan debutant Dominguez failed to leave the Alghero service park on Sunday morning with his team citing a mechanical issue.

This offered Černý a second opportunity that he did not pass up and he won three of Sunday’s four stages.

Zoltán László was the only other finisher in the depleted field as Enrico Brazzoli was also forced into retirement on Saturday. He ended over six minutes in arrears.

Černý’s victory bolted him from seventh to second in the championship standings, where he is now tied with Lauri Joona and Lászlo.
