Sordo eyes Sardinian success

Sixth on the road at this week’s Rally Italia Sardegna (2 - 5 June): is it sensible to think Dani Sordo could be Hyundai Motorsport’s best bet for a win?

The Spaniard is a big fan of rallying on the Italian island – unsurprisingly, given he’s won there for two of the last three years – and this week is his 14th start there. He’s not short on experience and he knows how to win.

Among the foundations for those two wins was a good place in the start order on the opening day.

This week he will enjoy another favourable start position, the balance to a lack of seat time which comes from missing the first three rounds of the season (when Oliver Solberg was driving the third factory Hyundai i20 N Rally1).

“Rally Italia Sardegna is always a really nice event for me,” said Sordo. “I feel comfortable there. I like both the roads and the location.

“Last year we didn’t have a lot of luck, as I made a small mistake and we went off, but the previous year was strong and I hope this year will be the same.”

Much as Friday’s action will help to shape the event, Sordo points out there are pitfalls throughout all three days in Sardinia.

He added: “The rally has very narrow roads, and the outer line can also be slippery, so you have to be clever and careful to stay in the lines. If you go wide, you can hit some large stones.

“It’s also normal to adjust the set-up of the car between the first and second pass here because of the difference in grip – in the first it is low, in the second quite high.”

Third last time out after a sensational run through the Wolf Power Stage, Sordo has poured cold water on talk of him needing more seat time to find his feet in the hybrid car. But after six months at home, two rallies in three weeks is fairly full-on.

He said: “Having two rallies in quick succession is very demanding after my break in competition, but I am really motivated.”
