Greensmith eyes Portugal’s top three

Gus Greensmith has targeted his maiden FIA World Rally Championship podium at next week’s Vodafone Rally de Portugal (19 - 22 May).

The M-Sport Ford driver is big fan of the Matosinhos-based gravel event and starts in Portugal for the seventh time in his career. He is determined to use that familiarity to eclipse the fourth place he scored at last year’s Safari Rally Kenya.

“I want to get on the podium,” said the Ford Puma Rally1 driver. “For me, that’s the only goal. I’m going to give it everything and go flat out from the start.

“Croatia was a little bit frustrating last time out. I think we had the pace to be top-five again without the punctures. But that’s behind us now and I’m looking forward to Portugal.”

Portugal was Greensmith’s first overseas WRC event in 2015 and his second WRC start. He finished fifth last year and has an affinity with the roads and the fans.

“I’ve always enjoyed Portugal,” said Greensmith. “In some ways, it feels more like a home event. It’s a very special place. I’ll be out there early for the rally and just enjoying being back in the place.

“The fans are amazing in Portugal, they help to make the rally really special. The numbers you see on the stages are just incredible and the roads are amazing.

“I’m determined to make this one work – whatever the result at the end of the weekend, it won’t be for the lack of trying.”

The Briton is one of five M-Sport Ford Pumas on the entry list. He is joined by Rallye Monte-Carlo winner Sébastien Loeb, Craig Breen, Adrien Fourmaux and Pierre-Louis Loubet.
