Munster and McErlean named in Hyundai junior line-up

Rising stars Grégoire Munster and Josh McErlean have been selected for Hyundai Motorsport’s 2022 Customer Racing Junior Driver programme.

The duo were chosen alongside two TCR series racing drivers as well as fellow rally drivers Nicolas Ciamin and Fabrizio Zaldivar, who will contest national championships this season.

Both youngsters are tackling full WRC2 campaigns aboard Hyundai i20 N Rally2 cars. Munster finished fifth at the season opener in Monte-Carlo, whilst McErlean debuted at Rally Sweden in February and ended 13th after getting stuck in a snowbank on day one.

They and their teams will receive support from Hyundai's Customer Racing engineers throughout the year, enabling them to gain inside knowledge from a top-level manufacturer squad.

“Supporting young drivers coming up through the ranks is a crucial part of the Customer Racing department,” said Hyundai's deputy team principal Julien Moncet.

“All the individuals we have selected for this year’s programme have already shown they are very capable behind the wheel, with strings of successes already behind them.

"With the support we can offer them as Customer Racing Junior Drivers, I am certain they will be able to continue to progress towards their ultimate goal and forge a career in professional motorsport,” he added.

McErlean was delighted to be selected for a second consecutive year. He believes the programme will be a big help in achieving success on his maiden season in the WRC’s leading support category.

"It's fantastic to have the Junior Driver status behind us for the year ahead," explained the Irishman. “Not only does it help our budget for 2022, but it brings great support and advice from Hyundai Motorsport's management and engineers.

"We have already had some great opportunities with the Customer Racing team previously with official testing and events, so I'm really looking forward to building that relationship further as we progress with the i20 N Rally2."
